Honoring the Anniversary of the 19th Amendment

By Rey Post, Associate Broker, Sotheby’s International Realty & Host of the “All Things Real Estate” Radio Show

In the spirit of the 98th anniversary of certification of the 19th Amendment to our nation’s U.S. Constitution—achieving the right to vote for women—“Rey’s Real Estate Recommendation” today speaks to the achievements that women have made in the field of real estate.

According to the McKissock Company, real estate is one of the best careers for women who want to create their own destiny. It’s one of those careers where you can be your own boss, set your own hours and see the rewards of all your work.

But as they observe, it’s a lot of work. From staying up late at the dining room table to find new clients, or researching all the data on a listing to know its true worth—are among some of the day-to-day challenges of   being a successfulreal estate professional.

And as the National Association of Realtors (NAR) notes, there are few industries remaining today that have not seen a drastic change in the role that women play.

Historically, women have been involved in real estate almost since its inception in 1794 and its establishment as a legitimate business in the 1840s.

As the NAR observes, in real estate’s early days, women filled office and clerical roles, but by the 1880s, women were already moving into the roles of agents and brokers, though at a relatively slow rate.

Nationwide, women brokers today  dominate the residential real estate market, and the majority of members are women with a college education, with 63 percent of all REALTORS being female.

Among broker licensees, 58 percent are female, compared with 67 percent of sales agent licensees. Among part-time sales agents, 70 percent are female, while 64 percent of full-time sales agents are female.

And at the Santa Fe operation of Sotheby’s International Realty, several of the women who serve as    successful brokers, are also leaders of the Santa Fe Association of Realtors, and also have given consistently and tirelessly for years to lend time and money to the venerable non-profits of our community. These real estate    professionalsinclude:

Shane Cronenweth, who supports NDI; Katherine Blagden, who supports the Buckaroo Ball; Karen Wolf-Mattison,who supports Kitchen Angels; Roxanne Apple and Caroline Russell, who support Southwest Care Center; and Marion Skubi, who supports the Santa Fe Symphony.

Also, when it comes to Kitchen Angels, many of our brokers also devote time and money to the efforts at  Thanksgiving to buy, prepare and deliver food to those less fortunate in Santa Fe.

From my own experience, many of our administrative staff have been invaluable to my personal success in      real estate, including Linda Varela, Judy Ramos and Lois Gray.

And when it comes to the success of the “All Things Real Estate” radio show,  Sotheby’s Director of Marketing, DebbieStevens; and Annie Hutton, Director of Digital Strategy for SantaFe.com have contributed significantly to making the program a winner among our listeners.

So “Rey’s Real Estate Recommendation” for this week is to acknowledge just some of the women who have   playeda major role in the real estate.

Their talents have made the trade successful for so many other professionals, as well as for home buyers and   sellers.
